LEIPZIG 1723, the recently released album of Ælbgut and Capella Jenensis, has been awarded the most prestigious german record prize, the "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik" in the category "Early Music". Jury member Matthias Hengelbrock says:

"The interpretation of the four-member vocal ensemble Ælbgut and the Capella Jenensis is the best to be released in this field in a long time."

I am excited to announce the BACH300 SUMMER CLASS, hosted by the Bacharchiv Leipzig! From the 7th to the 16th August 2023 I will be coaching young professional singers in all Bach solo repertoire, alongside an absolutely splendid team of coaches of VOX LUMINIS, the FREIBURGER BAROCKORCHESTER and ENSEMBLE RECHERCHE. The masterclass will take place in Leipzig, where J. S. Bach started to work as the Thomaskantor exactly 300 years ago. Performances of the students will take place at original venues of Bach's time, including the St. Thomas and St. Nicolai Churches.

I am happy to be featured as a guest of Ælbgut again, singing all tenor parts as a soloist on their new album "Leipzig 1723" (Accentus Music) with Capella Jenensis. This unique album features a collection of cantatas that have been performed exactly 300 years ago in Leipzig, in the process of finding a new Thomaskantor. We know that Johann Sebastian Bach was only third choice after his colleagues Christoph Graupner and Georg Philipp Telemann. Only the fact that they had resigned the offered position made Bach become the most famous Thomaskantor in Leipzig's history (1723-1750).

Für die neue CD "Leipzig 1723" (erschienen bei Accentus Music) war ich wieder Gast des Dresdner Ensembles Ælbgut, zuständig für alle Tenorsoli. Diese besondere Aufnahme vereint die vor genau 300 Jahren erklungenen Bewerbungskantaten für das Thomaskantorat in Leipzig. J. S. Bach war nur dritte Wahl; seine Kollegen Georg Philipp Telemann und Christoph Graupner waren bevorzugt worden. Telemann entschied sich, für ein höheres Salär in Hamburg zu bleiben, während Graupner von seinem Dienstherr in Darmstadt nicht nach Leipzig gelassen wurde. So wurde Bach der neue Thomaskantor und blieb es bis zu seinem Tod 1750.

Franz Schubert's Mass in A-flat major is one of the most touching sacred works I know. I was fortunate to contribute the tenor solos for the latest recording of this piece with Frieder Bernius and his Kammerchor and Hofkapelle Stuttgart, alongside my fantastic colleagues Johanna Winkel, Elvira Bill and Arttu Kataja. This album was released today with Hänssler Classics and I really love how it turned out. It is available on streaming platforms, too. I hope you enjoy this recording! Für die neueste Aufnahme dieses Stücks durfte ich als Tenorsolist mit Frieder Bernius, seinem Kammerchor und der Hofkapelle Stuttgart und meinen großartigen Kolleg:innen Johanna Winkel, Elvira Bill und Arttu Kataja zusammenarbeiten. on Christmas Eve 2022 the Dutch radio and TV recorded the Christmas Concert of Vox Luminis in Amsterdam, where I was fortunate to contribute my interpretation of the Evangelist in the "Weihnachtshistorie" by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672). an Heiligabend 2022 wurde das Weihnachtskonzert von Vox Luminis in Amsterdam live vom niederländischen Radio und Fernsehen aufgezeichnet. Unter anderem habe ich den wunderbaren Evangelistenpart in der Weihnachtshistorie von Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) singen dürfen. Das Konzert im Concertgebouw Amsterdam war ein großer Erfolg und ich freue mich, dass es nun auch auf YouTube zu sehen ist. Today was the release of my latest experimental project on Spotify: Four of my favorite songs by Franz Schubert, arranged for guitars - every song in its own style.

Schubertlied.Salon is an initiative founded in 2021 to create new perspectives on Schubert's songs. With my fantastic guitarist colleagues Willi Leinen and Martin Steuber we created our own arrangements for two guitars and recorded them last year. Three videos on Youtube are online since last year - now we are also available on Spotify with our music. Among them, perhaps the most famous of Schubert's songs, a version of "Erlkönig" (Goethe) played with two electric guitars.

Heute erschien mein neuestes Experiment auf Spotify: Vier meiner liebsten Lieder von Franz Schubert, für zwei Gitarren arrangiert - jedes in seinem eigenen Stil.

Schubertlied.Salon (gegründet 2021) ist ein Projekt welches versucht, neue Perspektiven auf Schuberts Lieder zu eröffnen. Mit meinen fantastischen Kollegen Willi Leinen und Martin Steuber zusammen habe ich eigene Arrangements für zwei Gitarren geschrieben und diese im vergangenen Jahr aufgenommen. Drei Videos sind seitdem auf Youtube zu finden - nun sind alle vier Lieder auch auf Spotify zu finden. Unter ihnen das vielleicht bekannteste Schubertlied: "Der Erlkönig" (Goethe), gespielt mit zwei E-Gitarren.

I am happy to announce that I will be teaching as part of a masterclass for young professional singers later this summer!

Hosted by the Musikfest Bremen and invited by Lionel Meunier, founder and artistic director of Vox Luminis, I will be teaching young professional singers in solo and ensemble sessions. In this Musikfest Atelier "Wege zu Bach" participants will prepare works by Johann Pachelbel, Johann Kuhnau et al. exploring what shaped Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical world. The results of this masterclass will be presented in a closing concert on September 3rd.

Ich freue mich bekanntzugeben, dass ich diesen Sommer im Rahmen einer Masterclass für junge professionelle Sänger*innen unterrichten werde.

Auf Einladung von Lionel Meunier, Gründer und Leiter des Ensembles Vox Luminis, werde ich beim Musikfest Bremen junge Talente in Solo- und Ensemblegesang unterrichten. In diesem Musikfest Atelier "Wege zu Bach" werden die Teilnehmer*innen Werke von Johann Pachelbel, Johann Kuhnau und anderen erarbeiten um herauszufinden, was die musikalische Welt Johann Sebastian Bachs geprägt hat. Die Ergebnisse werden in einem Abschlusskonzert am 3. September präsentiert.

On February 9th I had the honor to play the leading role of Jan van Leyden in an extraordinary opera première: J. S. BACH - THE APOCALYPSE. Because of COVID measures the tour through leading theaters in the Netherlands had to be cancelled, the premiere performance was also the last one. However, the production of Opera2Day in collaboration with the Netherlands Bach Society will be revived in 2024 and shown to greater audiences. The show has already received excellent reviews.

For now I look back to a fruitful and rewarding rehearsal process in The Hague with an extraordinary team on and off stage. I am looking forward to many future performances of "the opera that Bach never wrote"!

Am 9. Februar hatte ich die Ehre, die Hauptrolle des Jan van Leyden in einer außergewöhnlichen Opernpremiere spielen zu dürfen: J. S. BACH - THE APOCALYPSE. Wegen Corona-Beschränkungen musste die Tour in führenden Theatern der Niederlande abgesagt werden, sodass die Premiere auch die Derniere war. 2024 soll die Produktion von Opera2Day und der Nederlandse Bachvereniging wiederaufgenommen und einem großen Publikum gezeigt werden. Die Kritiker waren voll des Lobes.

Ich schaue dankbar einen intensiven und erfolgreichen Probenprozess in Den Haag zurück, der durch ein großartiges Team auf und hinter der Bühne realisiert wurde. Und ich freue mich auf viele weitere Aufführungen der "Oper, die Bach nie schrieb"!

Rondeau Productions and the Opera Chemnitz just released another album that I was happy to be involved in. The contemporary opera DER SCHUHU UND DIE FLIEGENDE PRINZESSIN by Udo Zimmermann (1943-2021) was planned to be staged and directed by Lorenzo Fioroni but had to be postponed to 2025 due to lockdown measures in Germany. Fortunately it was realized as a world premiere recording production.

Das Label Rondeau hat gemeinsam mit der Oper Chemnitz ein neues Album veröffentlicht, bei welchem ich mitwirken konnte. Die zeitgenössische Oper DER SCHUHU UND DIE FLIEGENDE PRINZESSIN von Udo Zimmermann (1943-2021) sollte 2020 unter der Regie von Lorenzo Fioroni auf die Bühne gebracht werden, musste aber aufgrund von Lockdownmaßnahmen auf 2025 verschoben werden. Glücklicherweise konnte sie als Weltersteinspielung realisiert werden.

A few weeks ago rehearsals have started in Den Haag (Netherlands) for the world premiere of a very special opera: The opera that Bach never wrote. J. S. BACH - THE APOCALYPSE is a production of Opera2Day in cooperation with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, one of the most acclaimed baroque orchestras worldwide. It tells the historical story of Jan van Leyden, who became a brutal leader of the rebaptist movement in the early 16th century in Münster, Germany. The music is based on Bach's original works and was recombined into a through-composed opera by the composer Panos Iliopoulos. I am very happy to announce that I will be singing the leading role of Jan van Leyden in this production which will be shown in leading theaters in the Netherlands and Belgium from January through March 2022. Vor ein paar Wochen haben in Den Haag (Niederlande) die Proben für die Welturaufführung einer sehr speziellen Oper begonnen: Die Oper, die Bach nie geschrieben hat. J. S. BACH - THE APOCALYPSE wird von Opera2Day in Kooperation mit der Nederlandse Bachvereniging produziert, einem der weltweit anerkanntesten Barockorchester. Die Oper erzählt die historische Geschichte von Jan van Leyden, der zum brutalen Anführer der Wiedertäuferbewegung im Münster des frühen 16. Jahrhunderts geworden ist. Die Musik ist Bachs Originalwerken entnommen und wurde vom Komponisten Panos Iliopoulos zu einer durchkomponierten Oper vereint. Ich freue mich sehr bekanntgeben zu können, dass ich in dieser Produktion die Hauptrolle des Jan van Leyden singen werde. Do you know Franz Schubert's "Erlkönig" after the ballad by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe? It is one of the most famous german poems and also the song is very popular among the classical music scene. During spring 2021 two friends of mine and me played around with some favorite Schubert songs, using guitars.
