J. S. Bach & C. P. E. Bach: Magnificat | Nederlandse Bachvereniging | Johanna Soller
In the days leading up to Christmas, the Netherlands Bach Society takes you from darkness to light. Bach’s radiant Magnificat is presented alongside the Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Two magnificent Christmas pieces by father and son. This programme, led by artistic leader Johanna Soller, unfolds from the tiniest musical germ: the monophonic Gregorian chant Ave Maris Stella. The dark mood of this hymn changes to the Sinfonia in D minor by Bach’s eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann, who never became very popular, despite being a talented composer. It was a very different story for Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most successful of all the Bach children, who was known in the second half of the eighteenth century as ‘the big Bach’. His Magnificat, his first large-scale vocal work, exudes the spirit of his father’s Magnificat and Mass in B minor. At the same time, it casts a glance ahead to the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
